What Is Acupuncture?

acupuncture needles on a person's backIn Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is a safe and effective way to stimulate the balance and flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”) through the meridians of the body. These meridians are like the highways of life energy throughout your body, and when the flow of Qi is blocked or diminished, you may experience illness or disease.

By restoring the balance and flow of Qi, acupuncture treats both the symptoms and the underlying causes of illness.

How Acupuncture Works

By inserting very fine needles into specific anatomical points on the body, acupuncture encourages healing and the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain relievers. While there are no negative side effects to acupuncture, the relaxing effects may last throughout the day—so we encourage you to take it easy after your appointment and drink plenty of water. Some of the therapeutic effects of acupuncture include:

  • Improved body function
  • Improved mood
  • Increased energy
  • Pain relief

At Optimum Family Chiropractic, we love working with people of all ages and walks of life. Wether you are a busy individual wanting to have more energy and resolve aches and pains or need more relaxation and are seeking self care modalities, our acupuncture patients has been reporting a high satisfaction rate with their sessions.

Either alone or as an adjunct to chiropractic care, acupuncture can help with relieving sore muscles and accumulated tension due to injuries, working position or bad posture.

Also, acupuncture has been a long-time favorite of pregnant people, being a drug-free approach, it can help with navigating the different hormonal changes of pregnancy, as restoring normal flow of Qi stimulates optimal hormone function. Acupuncture also helps alleviate tension and make pregnancy more comfortable.

Acupuncture treatments during pregnancy:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heartburn and constipation
  • Insomnia

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Edema
  • Breech and posterior positioned babies

Cupping is an ancient Chinese practice in which a warm cup is positioned on the skin, either in one place or moving on your skin. The process creates a suction where the skin and superficial layer of tissues (muscles) is being risen and held in the cup. It provides a quick and efficient way to stimulate the tissues and gives a feeling of deep tissue massage to the patient. Cupping is used to increase blood circulation to congested and problem areas, some benefits of cupping include:

  • Sore muscles
  • Swelling
  • Bronchitis
  • Sprain
  • Low backache
  • Shoulder tension

Acupuncture needles are finer than a strand of hair and do not typically cause pain or bleeding. Your acupuncturist will develop a specific care plan for your needs, and needles will be left in place for fifteen to thirty minutes or more, depending on your situation. She may manipulate the needles to fine-tune the flow of Qi.

Some people prefer to have a minimal amount of needle and enjoy cupping more.

Either way, the approach chosen by you and your acupuncturist will aim to make your treatment comfortable and reach maximum results.
