IV Equipment and Microplastics: How We Approach Patient Care

smiling women outdoor embracingWhen you need an IV treatment, you may have questions about what goes into the fluid and how it is delivered. Researchers are beginning to examine whether plastic particles from IV bags, tubing, and connectors can enter infusion fluids. It’s a developing area of study, and we think it’s worth paying attention to.

What Research Says About IV Plastics

A recent study found microplastics in fluids passed through certain IV systems under simulated clinical conditions. The number and types of particles depended on the materials and setup tested. Researchers have not yet established what these findings mean for a person’s health during a typical IV treatment. Read the study

Some IV equipment also contains polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Certain flexible PVC products use additives called plasticizers, which is one reason clinics may consider the materials used in their supplies. However, choosing a different material does not guarantee an IV system is free of particles or chemical exposure.

How We Choose and Handle Our IV Supplies

We review the materials used in our IV supplies and select non-PVC options. Our team primes IV lines before treatment and follows the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for preparation, storage, and use. We also keep supplies away from direct sunlight and follow applicable temperature guidance.

These steps reflect how we handle our supplies; they should not be taken as a promise that an IV treatment eliminates microplastic exposure.

Caring for Patients and Reducing Waste

Medical care creates waste, so we look for practical ways to reduce it. We separate clean packaging and other accepted recyclables from materials that require medical waste disposal. We recycle items whenever possible.

We’ll continue to review the research and our supply choices as evidence develops. If you have questions about the equipment used during an IV appointment, we’re happy to talk through them.
