Glutathione: Its Role in Immune Function, Cellular Health, and Wellness

smiling woman making heart shape with handsIn the complex world of cellular health, few molecules have as many roles as glutathione. Often called the “master antioxidant,” glutathione helps protect cells from oxidative stress and plays a part in normal immune function and overall health. Researchers are also studying how glutathione levels change with age.

What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a small molecule made from three amino acids, glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, that is found in cells throughout the body. It helps neutralize free radicals, participates in the liver’s normal detoxification processes, and helps maintain the balance of other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E.

Playing a Part in Immune Support

Glutathione plays a role in how immune cells function. Researchers have studied its relationship with inflammation and the body’s response to infection, though this does not establish that glutathione treatment prevents illness or improves immune health.

For example, research published in Frontiers in Immunology examined how glutathione affected antiviral responses in a laboratory cell model. Those findings help explain its biological role, but they do not show that IV glutathione protects people from viral infections. Frontiers in Immunology study

Anti-Aging and Cellular Health

Glutathione helps protect cellular components, including DNA, proteins, and lipids, from oxidative damage. Because oxidative stress is associated with aging, researchers are interested in glutathione’s role in cellular health. It also participates in processes the liver uses to handle certain substances.

Supplement studies on skin appearance have been small, and their findings should not be taken to mean that glutathione therapy slows aging or reliably reduces wrinkles.

Glutathione Treatments and Research

The body naturally produces glutathione, although levels may vary with age and health status. Researchers have studied oral supplements and IV treatments as ways to increase glutathione levels. How well a method raises measured levels is a separate question from whether it improves a person’s health or appearance. A randomized trial found that oral supplementation increased the body’s glutathione stores, so it would be inaccurate to dismiss oral glutathione as having limited absorption overall. Research into glutathione and chronic health conditions is ongoing. At present, it would be premature to describe glutathione therapy as a way to prevent cancer or treat these conditions.

Why Consider Glutathione Therapy?

If you’re curious about glutathione therapy, a consultation lets you discuss the available evidence, possible risks, and whether it is appropriate for you. IV delivery puts glutathione directly into the bloodstream, but it does not necessarily produce better clinical results than other approaches.
